The Institute for Cross-Disciplinary Engagement at Dartmouth (ICE) is dedicated to transforming the dialogue between the sciences and the humanities in academia and in the public sphere in order to explore fundamental questions where a cross-disciplinary exchange is essential. To achieve this goal, ICE organizes and promotes public events and online courses, and functions as an incubator of new academic work through the ICE Fellows Program

All activities revolve around questions that are of pressing importance to the modern world, as science increasingly addresses issues of meaning and value that have traditionally been the province of the humanities and religion. Such questions include:

  • Is there free will?
  • Will we become immortal?
  • What is the nature of reality?
  • Are there limits to knowledge? What are they?
  • Can/Should science and faith coexist in the 21st century?
  • Can science explain the origin of the Universe?
  • Can we find meaning in a purposeless Universe?
  • Is the Universe purposeless?
  • How will science and technology redefine our humanity?
  • Can science be a path toward increased spirituality?
